The Louisiana Constitution determines the assessment of the values of residential and commercial properties in the state. It establishes the assessment of homes and other residential properties at 10% of fair market value.

This value is often dictate by the sales price of your new home. For example, if you pay $80,000 for your new home, the fair market value is most likely $80,000, and your assessment for tax purposes would be $8,000. Improvements for business purposes, are assessed at 15% as opposed to 10%.
